Modular Mode

Discovering the possibility of arranging and rearranging. Playing with colour, patterns and endlessness combinations. Yes Lego was an eye-opener for children with a design dream! Luckily for us, those kids grew up to be respectable designers with modular qualities. A reason for the I Love Belgium team to collect three designer with a Lego past.

We start with Linda Topic (who you must remember from the Lazy Design bed). This time her work stays repetitive but with a modular side to it. This floor/wall covering isn't only beautiful to look at, it's even ecological. Going around the city, Linda collected waist material to make her own modular system. It's up to you to decide which material and/or colour will repeat itself. Whether you want a coco nut flooring or a laminated one, Linda makes sure you have enough possibilities. The basic form makes it easy for you to complete the puzzle. As the materials are so diverse, this flooring can start in your Bathroom and smoothly ends on your terrace.

We move on with one of Belgium's most respectable designer/architect. Vincent Van Duysen's D.R.Y. (Don't Repeat Yourself) is another play on the modular. Inspired by the irregular cracks found in plaster, dry paint and earth, this uniquely shaped tile gains uniformity when grouted with hexagonal lava-stone tiles. As Vincent wanted to avoid the stereotype of a self-repeating design. Like he says himself: " The pattern is generated by one tile only. By using hexagonal forms I discovered an original way to generate a complex play of lines. To avoid duplicates the tile can be twisted whereby. The joints are integrated into the pattern".

We end on the walls: the modular braindead-pattern by textile designer Pauline Gorelov. We assure you that this wallpaper/sticker will turn your wall into an immediate eyecatcher. Inspired on our brain, this modular pattern can become as easy or difficult as you want it to be. The only thing it demands from you is a creative energy boost. So go creative, go modular!
