The Cube

We love to eat in Belgium so we love to cook to! One says it's very hard to find a bad restaurant or eatery in Belgium. Everywhere you go in Belgium you will find a restaurant, a bistro or even a pub where you can have a decent meal. No wonder that electronics brand Electrolux launched the unique temporary dining concept The Cube in Belgium.

This temporary restaurant placed on top of the Parc du Cinquantenaire in Brussels received guests until the 3rd of July before it was heading off to Stockholm. The aim of the concept is to create an experience that surprises and inspires guests with fantastic tastes and never-before-seen views, ultimately stimulating them to explore their own creative boundaries next time they entertain friends or family at home.

Two Electrolux Cubes will travel across Europe offering a memorable dining experience for 18 guests per setting in magnificent locations. The transparent and semi-transparent structures will be seen atop of monuments, buildings and even water platforms in Belgium, Italy, Russia, Switzerland and Sweden but only for three months at each location.

The I Love Belgium team was invited to the Cube and memorable it was. Kudos to Electrolux, the Italian architect firm Park Associati and the resident chefs Bart De Pooter from De Pastorale and Sanghoon Degeimbre from l’Air du Temps. The dinner was not only mouthwatering delicious, it was a whole experience. The view, the food, the music,… everything was top notch. Even some of the porcelain was developed especially for the cube (and we loved the corian dining table and still wonder how they got that thing up there).

The I Love Belgium team had the opportunity to enjoy the cooking skills of Pastorale chef De Pooter. As an alternative to global fashions for fast food, fusion or molecular gastronomy, Pastorale puts the emphasis on the quality of the Flemish culinary heritage, which is brought up to date as a permanent ‘work in progress’. In the kitchen his staff use the latest techniques for this, and by preference the chefs make use of regional and ecological products, as well as those originating from sustainable agriculture.

From the professional Electrolux kitchen we could see the chef working on show to share their skills. It was a great thing to let the chef  be integral part of the event and provide an atmosphere more akin to cooking with friends than attending a traditional restaurant. We’re not going into detail about the food,  the pictures speak for itself.

Watch the movie we’ve posted, it’s the preparation of the dessert which was an event in itself. The dessert was prepared on the spot by the whole kitchen team including Bart De Pooter on a transparent rubber runner. Eating of the table has never felt so good.
