A Belgian Statement
Who doesn't love a great statement necklace? In Belgium they're also gaining popularity. Away are the teeny tiny necklaces it's all about volume, popping colours and a bold attitude.
So that's why we dedicate this post to statement necklaces made in Belgium (or the designers were at least educated in Belgium). Feast your eyes, the sun is out, the I Love Belgium team wants to see some colour in the streets!
Heaven Tanudiredja was born in Bali. His fashion life started when he was 15 years old, working as an assistant designer in Indonesia. He then studied and graduated at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Antwerp in Belgium. While he was still in his second year in this institution, the designer has received a Dries Van Noten Award. Under Steven Robinson, John Galliano’s right hand at the time, he then pursued his carreer at Christian Dior Haute Couture. Heaven Tanudiredja has established his own jewellery line and today he is still a member of the Dries Van Noten creative team. Hereunder you can see a piece from Heaven's current collection but you can also commission a piece of jewelry. Heaven loves to make one-of-a-kind pieces using vintage beads, gemstones or even crystals from antique chandeliers.
The Ek Thongprasert brand was found by two designers, Ek Thongprasert and Noon Passama S, two friends who met during their architecture studies in Thailand. After they graduated, they both left Thailand. Ek moved to Antwerp where he graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp and Noon to Amsterdam where she graduated cum laude from the jewelry department at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy. More than jewels, the duet advocates a philosophy, a return to the truth and so proposes ethnic jewels revisited in a more modern and funky version, graphic forms and strong colors and inspired by African or Asian ancestral tribes. The result is a funky collection of statement pieces made in silicone. Contemporary Ethnic!
The I Love Belgium team expressed their love for Mouton Collet jewelry a few times. Strong statements pieces are one of their trademarks (whether it's necklaces, hatpieces or cuffs). Mouton Collet was created by the talented designers Mathieu Mouton and Nicolas Collet. They have been in collaboration with: Maison Martin Margiela, Loulou de la Falaise, Nina Ricci for Olivier Theyskens, Kenzo, Shirtology, Herve Leger, and Jitrois. And of course everybody also knows them for the eccentric head or jewelry pieces they made for Lady Gaga. The below necklace is a mix of chain, black enamel, satin pink ribbon and mother of pearl beads, ideal for fashionista who just cannot make up their mind!
Elisa Lee or Elisabeth Leenknegt is a jewelry designer from Ronse (or Renaix in French). She became very popular with her silver jewelry collection with glass beads. Glass has been a recurrent theme in her family. Her grandfather used to make stained glass windows, her father is an artist making sculptures out of glass and she has a successful jewelry line working mainly with glass. Her latest collection Geo Deco is inspired by the Art Deco buildings in her home town. It's wearable art!
